There are various types of air conditioners for you to choose in Hong Kong, the most commons are :
A: Window type air conditioner
B: Split type aircon
C: Cassette type
(there are other types of systems such as VRV air conditioner, under ceiling air conditioner, floor mount type aircon, portable air conditioner, bulkhead type aircon......)
We suggest that you ask the following questions before you purchase and install an air conditioner unit as it might assist to you save time and money.
1: How big is your house ?
For flat/apartment or village house we suggest to use a window or split type air conditioner, it is because the size of the house is small.
If your room size is approximately 70-100 Sq/ft (single bedroom), we would suggest you choose 3/4 or 1 horsepower air con.
Larger houses such as Villa may need a VRV or ceiling type air conditioner.
2: Is there any set space / location to install the air conditioner?
Usually, in Hong Kong the flat/apartment will provide specific space(next to window) to install the air-con unit, if not , you can ask technician build/install a shelf to house the outdoor unit.
3: How long are you going to live there?
If you stay will be short term, we would suggest you install a window type air conditioner. It is because it is less expensive and easy to remove/ uninstall.
4: How much is your budget ?
The price range of the air-con will largely depend on the Brand and Model.
Usually Japanese brands will cost more but their size is small and they are durable, CN brand cost less and they are larger and use more energy.
5:Which type of air conditioner is more suitable for my place?
Window type air con usually are more suitable for a small bedroom/ space or studio. The average price of window type air-con is affordable and easy to install.
Window Split air-con suit are more suitable for living room / bedroom/ kitchen. Since the outdoor unit size is smaller and if installed with shelf, it can save in the future the cost building scaffolding and 3 person insurance.
Split type air-con is quieter compared with window type air conditioners. The reason for this is split type air con have two units, one indoor unit, one outdoor unit. Because the motor and compressor is in the outdoor unit, then you will not hear very much noise when you switch on the air-con.
Cassette type air conditioners should be for Living Room/ Shop/ Office.
VRV air con suitable for Villa or Apartment.
